Great Lakes Tandem Rally
July 4th Vacation Week

June 29–July 2, 2009

With more miles of shoreline, more state parks and more lighthouses than any other American county, Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, jutting into the deep blue waters of Lake Michigan, is perfectly sized for 4 days of tandeming. Despite its rugged coastline, the peninsula is remarkably flat, and its network of lightly-traveled farm roads is unbeatable. This is Americana at its finest—three dozen farming and fishing settlements (all with fewer than 1,000 residents), 500 craft and antique shops, and over a hundred fruit and cider stands.

Summer in the Midwest can be steamy hot. In Door County, however, cool lake breezes create midsummer weather that’s perfect for tandeming. Ideally scheduled for the four weekdays preceding the 4th of July weekend, with a four day absence from work, our rally becomes the centerpiece of a relaxing 9-day vacation.

Our home for four days is the elegant Landmark Resort. Door County’s comfiest full-service resort is centrally located in Egg Harbor, a picture postcard fishing village halfway up the forested 50-mile long (and 6–10 mile wide) upper peninsula. The Landmark Resort is a collection of beautifully-appointed luxury suites strung along a bluff overlooking the Lake Michigan’s sapphire blue waters. Most units include a living room, dining area, kitchen, bedroom, and private viewdeck or patio.

Because Santana’s adventure starts on the Monday of a holiday week, it’s easy to convert a four-day absence from work into nine-day family vacation. A day’s drive for the world’s largest concentration of tandem enthusiasts, our limited block of 70 rooms is likely to sell out early. Additionally, those who reserve soonest will get their first pick of the best rooms.
