Lose the winter blues with four days of spectacular cycling in everyone’s favorite winter destination—Arizona. If you think Arizona’s deserts are brown and bleak, the lush green landscape of the San Pedro River Valley will change your mind. Here we’ll rediscover the legends of the old west in a carefully-crafted tandeming adventure that features uncrowded highways, endless vistas, and the Sonoran Desert during its showcase season. The crystal clear air, sunny warm days, brilliant sunsets and gorgeous starry nights are certain to rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit for the many challenges of the upcoming year.
Santana’s Presidents’ Week Tandem Rally starts in Sierra Vista (an hour south of Tucson). Never heard of Sierra Vista? Bicycling Magazine rated it one of the “Ten Best” cities for cycling. Our first two days of tandeming include a traffic-free loop through historic Fort Huachuca (the U.S. Armies oldest military outpost was home of the “Buffalo Soldier”) and a ride across the valley to Tombstone (the town “Too tough to die”) The first two evenings include a live entertainment with a Grammy winning balladeer and costumed desperadoes. After two nights in Sierra Vista there is a choice of routes to nearby Bisbee—a wild west mining town that hung on to become a fascinating artists’ mecca. By adding ten miles to the basic 35 mile ride you can get your passport stamped before riding your tandem in Mexico. In Bisbee we tour the mine before spending a night in a historic district B and B.
Because Santana's adventure starts on the Sunday preceding a holiday week, it's easy to convert a four-day absence from work into nine-day winter vacation. Simply fly into Phoenix or Tucson, rent a car for a week, attend this tour, and then linger in sunny Arizona before flying homeward. If you don't want to take your bike on the plane, Santana's U.S. rallies feature prearranged low-cost round-trip shipping. And if you want to invite tandem-deficient friends, we can bring a fresh Santana from the factory. Once they've discovered the fun of tandeming, their basic rental fee can be applied to the subsequent purchase of a new Santana.
Although this rally (actually a four-day tandem tour) is affordably priced, it includes great rides, spectacular lodging, gourmet meals, exciting off-bike explorations, knowledgeable guides, valet luggage service and live entertainment.
