These aluminum SE models combine Santana’s expertise in tandem design with Easton’s undisputed leadership in lightweight aluminum tubing. The resulting strong and comfortable frames are more than two pounds lighter than our butted CroMoly models, and as much as three pounds lighter than harsh-riding aluminum frames built elsewhere. Because they can weigh as little as 30 pounds without regressing to unreliable solo-bike components, Santana’s aluminum tandems outsell all others.
Don’t other builders use Easton tubing? In an effort to stay competitive, Raleigh, Co-Motion, and KHS now share heavier, generic aluminum tubes produced in Taiwan. Others use a weaker 6000-series alloy, sometimes reinforced with a misleading label (i.e. Zn-9000). Our advice? Unless the aluminum is from Easton, steel is a better choice for tandems.
